1. Across – In an innovative and memorable way: SEMINALLY – from the word ‘seminal’ meaning to have the power of originality or creativity. Can also mean containing semen or seed which is can be a metaphor for being the first and of original qualities.
10. Across – There’s a point to it: SWORD
15. Across – Dangerous element: PLUTONIUM – Plutonium is a radioactive element with an atomic number of 94 (having 94 protons for each atom). When exposed to air (oxygen) pyrophoric plutonium oxide appears on the surface which causes the plutonium to glow as the the surface burns. Another unusual property of plutonium is that it’s density increases when it melts.
16. Across – Get to the point: TAPER
17. Across – Site of 1890s gold rushes: AUSTRALIA – The Australian gold rush began in 1851 when gold was discovered in the small town of Bathurst a few hundred kilometres inland from Sydney. Many intriguing stories of huge discoveries came out of the gold rush period but the most lavish and mysterious of all still has to be that of Lasseter’s reef. In brief, Lasseter claimed to have found an enormous gold reef in the desert of Western Australia. He returned to town to plan a mission to reclaim it but on his return to the desert he could not locate the mystery reef. Either he was lying or the gold reef is still out there waiting to be found again.

19. Across – Fort Laramie hrs: MST – Mountain Standard Time. Named after Jacques La Ramie, Fort Laramie is one of the most important Forts in US history. It was started by fur traders and because of it’s location on the Oregon Trail, it later played an important role in the settlement of the West as it protected and supplied emigrant wagons.
20. Across – Kirshner of “The L Word”: MIA – Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Mia Kirshner is an acclaimed actress and mostly well known for her role as Jenny Schecter in the “The L Word” series on Showtime.

34. Across – Make milk: LACTATE – We all know that breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for newborn babies but did you know it is also a health benefit for the mother? That’s right, women that breastfeed have a reduced chance of getting ovarian cancer, they will more quickly return to their pre-pregnancy weight, are less likely to get type-2 diabetes and will actually perform better in IQ tests while they are still lactating.

7. Down – Sweet smelling Bloomers: LILACS – highly fragrant flowers you wouldn’t believe they are actually relatives of the olive tree. When you think of Lilac you think of a shade of purple right? But you may be surprised to know that Lilacs actually come in a number of shades including pink, red, yellow and white.
13. Down – Contrition: REMORSE – contrition comes from the latin word ‘contritus’ meaning ‘grind to pieces’ or in the case of ‘remorse’, guilt is grinding away at you.
24. Down – Join: ENLIST: Here’s a funny fact: “Just Nuisance” the great dane dog was officially enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1939 to boost morale, accompanying soldiers on long journeys during World War II. Currently the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in any defence force.
38. Down – Smoothie sweeteners: BERRIES – all types of edible berries are only now being realised as the super food that they have been a long time not given credit for. They all have individual properties that assist the human body to avoid cancer and other diseases including diabetes. They can reduce blood levels, insulin deficiencies and dependencies, improve memory functions and are also packed with micronutrients and fibre to assist in digestion and general well-being.
41. Down – Emphatic turn down: I SAID NO! – ok not much else to say here then.
42. Down – Current principle: OHMS LAW – in simple terms Ohm’s Law says that the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage (difference in potential between it’s ends) across it. For example double the voltage and you double the current and also double the ZAAAAP!!!
43. Down – Edit, in a way: RESPELL
