The monkey covering his eyes is a representation of the 3 Wise Monkeys (also called the 3 mystic apes) which can be seen as a carving on the door of a shrine found in Nikko, Japan. The one covering his eyes is Mizaru. Kikazaru is the one covering his ears, and Iwazaru is the one covering his mouth.
Thus, the famous saying “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”
